jfk airport domestic baggage claim area

The domestic baggage claim area of the International Arrivals Building is a unique marriage of steel and fabric technology which has produced a cost-effective and futuristic looking structure.

Measuring 70′ wide by 96′ long, the roof has been designed by New York architect David Liebowitz and utilizes Rubb’s patented fabric tensioning hardware, which was also used on the highly acclaimed Temporary Powell Library at UCLA in California. The roof is supported by 12 arched, 8″ x 12″ hot dip galvanized beams which are secured by galvanized connected purlins and stainless steel exterior wind bracing cables. The 12 arched I-beams were stretch formed by Chicago Metal Forming.

Over this is tensioned the high tenacity PVC coated polyester architectural fabric, which is top finished with a DuPont Tedlar coating to help maintain a clean appearance. The translucent fabric is also used for the endwall panels to create a light filled interior.
